Back to school: how I tested then…
My daily testing life I tested only a few times a day: at wake-up, before every meal, before going to school, after coming back from school, before night, and any time I felt weird, a total of about 7-8 times per day. When appropriate, I corrected my BG with carbs or insulin.
Back to school: counting carbs
Carb Counting There are many ways to approach diabetes management for a newly diagnosed diabetic: typically, the endocrinologist, some time after diagnosis, explains the approach that she wants the T1D to take. But, whatever method we use, at one level or another we need to count carbohydrates. As you have probably noticed already, we T1Ds… Continue reading Back to school: counting carbs
Back to school: ketones
Ketone testing Insurance companies normally allow cheap ketone strips that you pee on, and that go bad every 6 months. Back to school: treating a low
Treating a low More than likely, your endocrinologist will tell you how they want to treat a low (“hypo”, for hypoglycemia—-it’s funny how many long words we T1Ds need to learn!). Treating an urgent low when you are unconscious If we go so low that we are unconscious, someone is going to call 911 to revive us. There is, however, a fast way to revive us, which is a commercial injector of Glucagon. I carry one with me at all times, and leave one at the… Continue reading Back to school: treating a very bad low
Back to school: the gear I carry
Gear I carry all my glucose gear, except for my phone, in my “glucose bag,” a small sling bag which is always with me when I’m out of the house. I use a small glucose bag, very light, in a bright color, with a single strap, that I carry across my back. The bag has… Continue reading Back to school: the gear I carry

Back to school: diabetes and the school
Diabetes and the school This is a broad subject that we’ll discuss multiple times in later chapters. When I went back to school after my diagnosis, before they would let me back into class, the school had my parents fill and sign a diabetes care plan that the school needed to follow. More than likely,… Continue reading Back to school: diabetes and the school
