T1D Diagnosis: lessons learned

  • While there is a strong genetic component in Type 1 Diabetes, 9 children out of 10 diagnosed with it have no family antecedents: any child can be diagnosed with T1D
  • Pediatric DKA is a deadly condition that only specialized hospitals know how to treat: if you suspect DKA in a child, pick your hospital well.
  • Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease, where our own immune system turns against our beta cells and destroys them, leaving us without the ability to make insulin.
  • Type 1 Diabetics are unlimited: they can do ANYTHING!
  • Type 1 Diabetes is a lifelong condition with no cure. Its treatment requires daily, focused care.
  • You can’t catch T1D from a T1D
  • Siblings of recently diagnosed T1Ds are more likely to be T1Ds and should be registered into TrialNet
