Back to school: lessons learned

  • On MDI, we inject multiple times per day. At least one of these injections is for basal insulin, while the others are for bolus insulin
  • Testing BG with a glucose meter is quite precise but ends up being a surprisingly complex maneuver if we want to do it right
  • We need to regulate lows with carbs, and highs with insulin.
  • We calculate insulin corrections with the CF or ISF
  • Most T1Ds use, when they start , a standard 15 carb correction when low
  • If we T1Ds go unconscious, others will need to use a glucagon injection to bring us back. I carry glucagon everywhere with me.
  • There are tons of practical details to think of when going back to school. Make sure you think of everything we had to think through.
  • For me, the most important were: (a) am I going to tell everyone I have diabetes, (b) do I go for cafeteria lunches or homemade ones,  (c), do I inject in class or in private?
  • Your parents will need to do a lot of paperwork with school before you can come back to class.
